SciGirls

Welcome to South Texas SciGirls—the awesome destination for girls (ages 8-13) in South Texas who love science!

Whether it’s investigating the safety of drinking water in a rural community, engineering “green” products for their friends and family, or helping migratory animals reach their destination safely, girls are using science to reach goals, solve problems, and help others. Great things happen when girls get creative with science!

About SciGirls

SciGirls began as part of DragonflyTV’s (TPT) national outreach program, also called SciGirls. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Program for Gender Equity, SciGirls outreach empowered teachers and youth leaders to deliver hands-on science activities and career guidance to girls in their communities.

Do you love science? Do you live in KLRN’s viewing area? Well, now’s your chance to become a South Texas SciGirl—and share ideas, do fun experiments, and get together for special activities with other girls who also love science. It’s easy to sign up.

SciGirl Experiences

SciGirl meet-ups, planned events and activities help support collaborative, tactile learning, setting girls on the “science fast track” toward improved critical thinking skills, enhanced problem solving abilities, and ultimately career success.

OVEE Screenings
Every month SciGirls can participate in an evening OVEE screening. OVEE is an online social screening platform for watching your favorite PBS and local public television programs together. Watch a one-hour long PBS STEAM-based documentary moderated by a local specialist.

Upcoming SciGirl Meet-Ups

No Meet-Ups are currently scheduled for Fall 2014. Check back soon for more information. All events will require on-line reservations. Attendance may be limited to site availability. Locations of events are subject to change.

Past events have included a visit to the UT Health Science Center’s brain lab, a day of learning at St. Mary’s University Bill Greehey School of Business and a Dinosaur after Dark Camp-In at the Witte Museum. At each event, participants received official South Texas SciGirls materials as well as fun science experiments, and other science-related resources and goodies that inspire girls to continue learning about science outside the program.
